Best Blender Material Libraries (2026)
The best PBR material libraries for Blender, free and paid, plus how to build your own with the asset browser for nothing.
Material libraries solve a real problem — you need a plausible brushed metal now, not in twenty minutes — but they are also the category where people most often pay for something they could have assembled for free in an afternoon.
This page covers the free route properly first, because it is genuinely good, then the paid options and what they actually add. For the same tools sorted by discipline, see add-ons by use case.

The free route: build your own with the asset browser
This is really an asset management problem wearing a materials hat, and solving it once pays off across models, HDRIs and node groups too.
Blender's asset browser is free, built in, and better than most paid material managers were three years ago. If you have not set it up, do this before buying anything.
1. Make a library folder. Anywhere permanent — D:\blender_assets — and one blend file inside it, materials.blend.
2. Register it. Edit ▸ Preferences ▸ File Paths ▸ Asset Libraries ▸ +, point it at the folder, give it a name.
3. Mark materials as assets. In materials.blend, right-click a material in the outliner (or the material properties dropdown) and choose Mark as Asset. It gets a preview thumbnail and appears in the asset browser.
4. Use them. Open an Asset Browser editor, pick your library, and drag a material onto any object in any file.
5. Add metadata. Give each asset a catalogue, tags, and a description. This is the step people skip and it is the one that makes a library of 300 materials usable rather than a wall of thumbnails.
That is a real material library, working across every project, costing nothing.
Where to get free materials to fill it
ambientCG CC0, thousands of PBR sets, no account needed. The default answer, and the source a good number of paid libraries repackage.
Poly Haven CC0, smaller but very high quality, with an official Blender add-on that imports directly.

Texture Ninja Public-domain photo sources for when you need something specific that no PBR library has.
CC0 means no attribution required and commercial use is fine, which removes the licensing question entirely for client work.
Loading them fast
Node Wrangler is bundled with Blender and is the tool that makes downloaded PBR sets bearable. Enable it in Preferences, add a Principled BSDF, select it, press Ctrl+Shift+T, and select all the maps in the folder. It wires base colour, roughness, metallic, normal and displacement automatically, including the colour-space settings people get wrong by hand.
If you do nothing else on this page, do that. It converts "download a material" from a five-minute job into a ten-second one.
What paid libraries actually add
Three things, and it is worth being clear which of them you are buying:
Curation. Someone chose 500 materials that look good together and cover common needs. Genuinely valuable — ambientCG has thousands of sets and choosing is work.
In-viewport browsing. Applying from a panel without leaving your scene, versus opening an asset browser editor.
Delivery. How the files reach your disk, which matters more than it sounds. A 60 GB initial download is a real cost.
What they do not add is better materials than CC0 sources. A lot of paid libraries are repackaged CC0 sets with a nicer browser. That is a legitimate product — you are paying for the curation and the interface — but it is worth knowing what the money is for.
The paid options
Extreme PBR Nexus
The largest material library add-on, with an in-viewport browser. The default answer if breadth is what you want.
Sanctus Library
Procedural materials rather than scanned textures — resolution-independent and tweakable at the node level.
materialiq
Curated Cycles and Eevee material library with sensible presets. Often on sale from $1.99.
VMats
Large realistic material library for Cycles and Eevee. Bulk download rather than on demand.
Realtime Materials
Eevee-focused material set built for real-time viewport work rather than final Cycles renders.
Poly Haven Asset Browser
Browses and imports the entire Poly Haven CC0 library — HDRIs, textures, models — from inside Blender. Optional; the library itself is free.
Extreme PBR Nexus ($29+) is the breadth leader — thousands of materials with a viewport browser, and the one to look at if catalogue size is what you want.
Sanctus Library takes the other approach: procedural materials rather than scanned textures, so they are resolution-independent and you can open the node graph and change them. It has a free tier, which makes it the cheapest way to find out whether procedural suits you.
materialiq is frequently discounted to a couple of dollars and is a genuinely good curated set at that price. VMats ($89.99) is the large realistic collection if budget is not the constraint.
RanTools (and P-Cutter)
1,800+ CC0 PBR materials and an HDRI library, both browsable from the viewport — you assign a material or swap the world lighting without leaving the 3D view or opening a file browser. The two are the same panel, which is the part that matters day to day: material and lighting decisions are made together, and most setups make you leave one context to change the other.
The delivery is the other design decision worth calling out. Assets download on demand rather than as one enormous initial payload, so you install something small, browse the full catalogue, and only what you actually apply hits your disk. That answers the main practical complaint about large libraries — tens of gigabytes up front for a set you will use a hundred items from — and CC0 means no licence question on client work.
At $18.90 it is the cheapest way to get a viewport material browser at all, and the HDRIs, cables, boolean cutting, lighting, baking and batch rendering come with it rather than instead of it. 5.0 from 35 ratings. Mine, so weigh that — the rating is not mine to award.

Roughness variation and imperfection maps on top of any material.
Bake-A-Node
Bakes any single shader node to a texture, which stock Blender makes awkward.
Scattershot
Texture bombing — kills visible tiling on large surfaces. Very narrow, very good at it.
Node Preview
Live thumbnails on every shader node. One of those things you cannot unsee once you have it.
SimpleBake
Texture baking that actually works first time, including full PBR sets for engine export.
Those first three are mine and free on Gumroad. Quick Roughness Layers is the one worth installing first — roughness variation on a flat material is usually what separates something that reads as CG from something that does not.
Scattershot ($14.99) solves visible tiling on large surfaces, which is the other common giveaway. SimpleBake ($20+) is the baking tool that works first time when you need full PBR sets for an engine.

Keeping a library healthy
Organise as you add. Catalogues and tags from day one. A 300-material library with no metadata is unusable and nobody ever goes back to fix it.
Watch the disk. Bulk-download libraries grow fast. Check what a library will occupy before installing, and prefer on-demand delivery if you are on a laptop SSD.
Back up the folder. Your asset library is a folder of blend files and textures. Copy it. That is the whole backup strategy.
Mind the startup cost. Libraries that index their contents at registration are among the worst offenders for slow Blender startup. Check the add-on's preferences for a scan-on-startup option and turn it off if you find one.
Updates. A material library installed from a .zip sits in a local repository, so Blender will never tell you when the library gets new content — a repository property, not an add-on one. Tools that check for themselves are the ones you never have to chase, which is the gap Project LEUC closes for developers.
