Best Blender HDRI Add-ons (2026)

The best HDRI add-ons and libraries for Blender, the free CC0 sources worth using first, and the world-shader setup that fixes most problems.

An HDRI is the fastest good lighting in Blender. Drop one in and you get plausible key light, fill, and reflections in one step — which is why it is the default starting point for product renders, hard-surface shots, and look-dev.

It is also where a lot of renders quietly go wrong, because the default setup gives you no control over the two things you most need to control: rotation and background visibility. For how HDRIs fit alongside everything else, see add-ons by use case.

Free HDRIs: where they come from

Worth knowing before you consider paying for anything, because the good free sources are the industry default rather than a compromise.

Poly Haven Several hundred HDRIs, CC0, up to 16K, and the reference source. Their official add-on browses and imports directly — the fastest free workflow available.

ambientCG CC0, a good complementary set, and the same place to get your materials.

HDRI Haven Now part of Poly Haven — same library, older name.

CC0 means no attribution and commercial use is fine. For the vast majority of work, Poly Haven plus its add-on is the complete answer and costs nothing.

The world setup that actually works

The default drag-and-drop gives you an HDRI you cannot rotate and a background you cannot hide. Both are fixed by the same small node setup, and it is worth building once.

In the World shader editor:

Rotation is the important one. The Mapping node's Z rotation spins the lighting around your subject. Most HDRIs have one obvious key light — the sun, a window, a bright patch of sky — and rotating it is how you decide where your highlight and shadows fall. Not being able to do this is the single biggest reason HDRI lighting looks accidental.

Strength on the Background node controls exposure. Values far from 1.0 usually mean the HDRI is wrong for the shot rather than that it needs correcting.

Hiding the background while keeping the light

Very common need: you want the HDRI lighting but a transparent or solid background.

Render Properties ▸ Film ▸ Transparent. The world still lights the scene; the background renders as alpha. That is the whole trick, and it is one checkbox.

For a different visible background while keeping the HDRI light, use a Light Path node: run Is Camera Ray into a Mix Shader that swaps the environment texture for a plain colour on camera rays only. Reflections and lighting still use the HDRI.

HDRI Maker ($29+) is the most complete: library plus the world-shader tooling — rotation, ground projection, sky generation — as a panel rather than a node setup you rebuild each time. PolyDome and Alt Tab Easy HDRI both focus on ground projection, which is what makes an HDRI backplate hold up when the camera moves.

Gaffer ($19) is not an HDRI library at all but belongs here: it manages every light in your scene from one list and includes a world panel. Cheapest meaningful upgrade to how you light.

Carries the same Poly Haven CC0 catalogue, browsable from the viewport, and puts an advanced world shader on top of it — rotation, strength and background visibility as a panel rather than the node setup described above, which you would otherwise rebuild every scene.

That is the real split with the free add-on, and it is not about catalogue size. Poly Haven's add-on is broader in asset type — HDRIs, textures and models, wired into Blender's asset browser — and if you want one tool feeding the asset browser across all three, install it. Physical Starlight and Atmosphere ($70) is a different thing entirely: it generates a physically-based sky rather than using a captured one. Covered in sky and cloud add-ons, and worth knowing about because for outdoor scenes it often beats an HDRI.

Choosing an HDRI for the shot

More useful than any add-on:

Match the light to the story Overcast gives soft flattering light for products. Clear sky gives a hard sun and drama. Studio HDRIs give controlled reflections — the right call for chrome and glass.

Resolution: less than you think For lighting only, 2K is plenty and loads instantly. You need 8K or 16K only when the HDRI is visible and sharp behind your subject.

Watch reflections on metal Chrome mirrors the HDRI directly, so a low-resolution one becomes obvious. The one case where resolution genuinely matters.

One HDRI is rarely finished lighting Use it as the base, then add one or two area lights for the highlights you want. Pure HDRI lighting reads flat because nothing was placed deliberately.

Common problems

Render is too dark or blown out. Adjust Background Strength, but check your Color Management view transform first — AgX (Blender's default since 4.0) handles highlights very differently from the old Filmic, and a lot of "my HDRI is wrong" is actually a view-transform expectation.

Background is visible and you do not want it. Film ▸ Transparent.

Cannot rotate it. You are missing the Mapping node. See the setup above.

Blender got slow after adding HDRIs. Large HDRIs are memory-hungry, and library add-ons that index at startup are a known cause of slow boot times. Use 2K for look-dev and swap to high resolution only for the final render.

Seams or a visible pole. The HDRI is low resolution or badly stitched. Try another — with CC0 sources there is no cost to switching.
