Best Blender Sky and Cloud Add-ons (2026)

The best Blender add-ons for skies, clouds and atmosphere — True Sky, Physical Starlight, Cloudscapes — plus the free built-in sky to try first.

Blender ships with a physically-based sky model most people never open, and a category of paid add-ons that exists because that model stops short in three specific places: clouds, presets, and control over the result.

Start free: the built-in Sky Texture

Two minutes, no purchase, and it settles the question for a lot of shots.

In the World shader editor, replace the Background colour with a Sky Texture node (Shift+A ▸ Texture ▸ Sky Texture) and set the type to Nishita. It is an atmospheric scattering model — you set physical conditions and it computes a sky.

The controls that matter:

  • Sun Elevation — height above the horizon. Low gives you sunset colour and long shadows; this single value does more for mood than anything else.
  • Sun Rotation — compass direction. Decides where shadows fall.
  • Air / Dust / Ozone — haze and colour. Raise Dust for a hot or polluted look, Ozone for a colder blue.
  • Altitude — camera height above sea level. At high values the sky darkens toward space.

Position the sun by clock time with the bundled Sun Position add-on (Preferences ▸ Add-ons ▸ enable it). Give it a latitude, longitude, date and time, and it places the sun accurately — the correct approach for archviz where the client will ask about 3pm in June.

Light the scene with it properly: add an actual Sun lamp rather than relying on the world alone. World-only lighting gives soft, directionless shadows, because Nishita's sun disc is a small bright region rather than a light source. Match the lamp's angle to the sky's sun, and set its Angle to about 0.526° for a real sun.

What it cannot do: clouds, and any sky that is not a clear atmosphere. That is where the add-ons start.

The specialist pick if skies are the thing you want solved. It is a complete Cycles sky system — sun, sky, volumetric clouds and fog under one panel — rather than a texture with sliders, so you can build an overcast afternoon or a storm front without leaving the interface.

The trade-off is that it is Cycles-focused. If your work is Eevee-first, look at Physical Starlight instead.

The heavyweight. Sun output is computed from temperature in Kelvin and energy in W/m²sr with limb darkening, which sounds like overkill until you need light that is physically defensible for archviz or product work. It has both procedural and texture-based clouds, and it runs in real time in Eevee as well as Cycles.

Roughly a decade of continuous development and a very large user base, which in add-on terms is the strongest maintenance signal available. At $70 it is the most expensive option here, and the one least likely to be abandoned.

Pro-Lighting: Skies ($47) belongs in a different category despite the name — it is a curated HDRI sky library with a lighting browser, not a procedural sky. If what you want is a photographed sky rather than a computed one, it and the HDRI options are the right shelf.

Cloud add-ons

Clouds split cleanly into two technologies, and the choice matters more than the brand.

VDB volumes are real volumetric data — genuinely three-dimensional, correct from any angle, and heavy to render. Right for hero shots and camera moves.

Shader and geometry-node clouds are computed or faked. Far lighter, far faster to iterate, and they can fall apart if the camera flies through them. Right for backgrounds and stills.

Cheap procedural volumetric clouds if you only need a handful of hero shots.

Free alternative worth trying first: a cloud HDRI. Poly Haven has hundreds, CC0, and for any shot where the clouds are distant scenery this is both the cheapest and the most convincing option. Use it as the world, and only reach for volumes when the camera needs to move past a cloud.

For a hand-built version, a Cube with a Principled Volume shader driven by noise gets you a soft, blobby cloud in a few minutes — good for background fill, not for a hero. Keep the Density under 1 and add a Color Ramp for definition.

Not a sky specialist, but it includes an HDRI library and an advanced world shader — rotation, strength and background-visibility controls as a panel rather than a node setup you rebuild each time — alongside boolean tools, 1,800+ CC0 materials, cables, lighting, baking and batch rendering.

If skies are what you want, True Sky or Physical Starlight are the better buys and I would not argue otherwise. This is the option when the sky is one of several things on your list.

Four things that fix most sky renders

(For non-photoreal work, none of this applies in the same way — see stylised and NPR shaders.)

Your view transform is doing more than you think. AgX (Blender's default since 4.0) handles bright skies very differently from the old Filmic. A lot of "my sky looks wrong" is a Color Management expectation, not a sky problem.

Sun angle over sun brightness. A sun at 5° elevation looks like evening because of scattering, not because it is dim. Move the elevation before you touch strength.

Add haze. Real skies are not clean. A little Dust, or a very light volume scatter across the scene, is usually the difference between "3D sky" and "photograph".

Match the ground. A warm sunset sky over neutrally-lit terrain reads as fake immediately. Whatever lights the sky has to light everything else.

Keeping the add-on updated

Sky add-ons bought as a .zip land in a local repository, and Blender will never offer you an update for them — a property of the repository, not of the add-on, not a fault of the seller. Given how often these tools ship fixes against new Blender releases, it is worth checking the product page each time you upgrade Blender.

That gap is the specific thing Project LEUC closes for developers: a free update-check endpoint an add-on calls, so every install learns about a new version on release day.
